Subordinating conjunctions (SWABI)

A subordinating conjunction joins two thoughts in one sentence.

We can remember subordinating conjunctions with this acronym SWABI

S - Since

W - When

A - After

B - Because

I - If

You use SWABI to connect 2 thoughts

Most of the time, you are connecting an incomplete thought (fragment) with a complete thought (a complete sentence)

Remember that a sentence requires a subject and a verb

Example: Tyler wasn't mad he lost his glasses. Had another pair.

Because he had another pair, Tyler wasn't mad he lost his glasses.

Tyler wasn't mad he lost his glasses because he had another pair.

Evan will buy a new computer. It's cheap enough.

If they are cheap enough, Evan will buy a new computer.

Gloria jumped up and down on the bed. She ate 10 sugar cubes.

Gloria jumped up and down on the bed after she ate ten sugar cubes.

The rain stops. We can go play handball in the park.

When the rain stops, we can go play handball in the park.
