Preterite of Irregular verbs

There are three "families" of irregular verbs in Spanish

Today we are going to work with the "u" stem family.

The verbs in this family are: "estar", "poder", "poner"', "tener" and "saber".

One common new stem works for all the conjugations.

One new set of endings for each family will be used.

No accent mark is needed for irregular preterite verbs.

The first verb of this family is "estar" (to be).

The new endings are: -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -ieron.

We put together the new common stem and the new endings:

Yo estuve

Tú estuviste

él, ella uested estuvo

nosotros, nosotras estuvimos

ellos, ellas, ustedes estuvieron

As you can see, no accent was needed.

All the subjects shared the same new stem: estuv

Each subject used a different conjugation ending:

-e, -iste, -o, -imos- ieron
