Having read the Afterword, I now can see that the author has

incorporated real historical events into the story. For instance, in the story,

Mr. Travis wanted to stay in San Francisco to rebuild his home, which

meant he was going to live in a tent for a while. According to the Afterword,

this is based on the historical fact that survivors of the earthquake lived in

tent cities throughout San Francisco as they rebuilt the city.

As I look for details about how Henry experiences

the earthquake, I read that at first, he heard some rumbling noises that sounded like an approaching train. I’m going to make a note of that idea as the first thing that happened to Henry when the earthquake started.
