1. Nationalism is pride in one’s country. African nationalists realized they needed unity among the diverse groups to win independence. 

2. Pan-Africanism is the unity of all Africa, a concept used to strengthen independence movements. 

3. Senghor rejected negative views of African cultures; he urged Africans and Europeans to take a new “positive” look at African culture. 

4. Ghana was the first African nation to gain independence through peaceful means.

5)  More than 100,000 Algerians and 10,000 French died in the fighting. 

6)  1964, 1300 people died, mostly from the Kikuyu tribe 

7)  Problems colonialism left behind in Africa included lack of preparation for independence, weakening of local leadership, and disrupted traditional economies.  

 Positive changes of colonialism included building railroads, roads, and bridges, and setting up schools and hospitals.

Kwame Nkrumah - organized strikes and protests in Ghana 

Boycott -- peaceful means of protest 

Jomo Kenyatta -- independence fighter in Kenya 

Guerilla warfare -- the hit and run attack tactic was a successful means of fighting during battles for independence.
