Le pronom complément y

• Y replaces a noun that is preceded with à, au, aux etc...or a preposition of place such as dans, en, sur, sous

• Y is sort of an adverbial pronoun meaning "there"

• Y is placed directly before the verb which has logical rapport with the pronoun.

• In the passé composé y is placed directly before the auxiliary verb "avoir" or "être"

• In the imperative form, y is placed immediately after the verb with a hyphen.

The pronoun en

• En replaces de + noun, and generally refers to things. (some of it)

• Usual English meanings are: some, any, of it( them), from there

• En must always be expressed in French even though its equivalent may not be expressed in English

• When used with numbers, en is placed before the verb and the number is placed at the end of the phrase or sentence.

• With certain idiomatic expressions containing de such as avoir besoin de...j'en ai besoin...etc...list follows

• The pronoun en is placed directly in front of the verb to which it corresponds unless the passé composé is being used as it is then placed before the auxiliary verb
