There are three groups which paygrades are divided into:
Enlisted [E1 - E9c]
Warrant Officers [WO1 - CWO5]
Officers [O1 - O10 (O11/O12)]
Paygrades can be viewed as a simplified code that allows one to find out an individual's rank

Paygrade clearly denotes the (Enlisted/Officer/WO) GROUP & AUTHORITY of a rank, whereas a rank name does not.
Paygrade - E4; Rank - Corporal

Paygrade - CWO2; Rank - Chief Warrant Officer 2
Paygrade - O3; Rank - Captain
Paygrade - O7; Rank - Brigadier General
