New ways to travel lesson part 2

First steam locomotive was built in 1804

These are trains that run with steam

Over the next 10 years, these became more powerful and could go long distances

As a result, people started planning railroads

In 1863, two companies began building a railroad line across America

One company began east of the Mississippi River and the other near the west coast

On May 10, 1869, the two lines met in Promontory, Utah

This new railroad was call the transcontinental railroad

Transcontinental means across the continent

Many new roads were added in the US in the 1800s

These roads made travel easier

A toll is money that is paid for using a road

Tolls helped pay for building and fixing roads

Roads became used less once railroads were built but became popular again once people started driving cars

A huge highway system was built in the 1900s and people could finally easily travel across the United States

Transportation continued to improve in the 1900s

The Wright Brothers began building airplanes

In 1903 their first airplane stayed in the air for 12 seconds

People could now fly and traveling by air became more popular

Planes continued to get larger and more powerful
