Chapter 5: Citizenship

Civil rights are rights of ALL citizens to be treated equally under the law.

Segregated means separated.

A cause is something people feel strongly about.

A strike happens when workers stop working until things change.

A boycott is when people refuse to do something for a reason.

Following laws, respecting others, and volunteering are RESPONSIBILITES.

Voting, practicing religion, and being able to have a fair trial are RIGHTS.

1. Mary Bethune started the first African American girls' school called the Daytona Normal and Industrial.

2. Cesar Chavez started the organization that helped fight for farmers' fair treatment called the National Farm Workers.

3. Clara Barton began the American Red Cross, which helped during natural disasters.

She helped women get the right to vote.  

Eleanor Roosevelt led a group that recognized that ALL people in the world had human rights.

Thurgood Marshall was the FIRST African American Supreme Court Justice.
