The Science behind Fireworks
Have you ever wondered how fireworks get their color? Today, we will be investigating how scientists are able to use the light waves emitted by different substances to create a colorful fireworks display.
3
Video #1 - Heating Chemical Samples
Today, we will be taking observations of light emitted by different chemical samples.
These chemicals are extremely useful in creating different color combinations in fireworks and other light displays.
During the video, think about the characteristics of each light wave! Is each light wave the same? Or do they have different properties?

Multiple Choice
Each chemical substance in the video emitted identical waves:
True
False
6
Each chemical emits unique waves
In the video, each chemical sample emitted a different color of visible light.
Depending on the chemical, the waves emitted had unique wave properties.
Based on the frequency/wavelength of the wave, we perceive the color of light differently.
Scientists use these chemicals to create unique color combinations in fireworks displays

Multiple Choice
Calcium emits orange light and Strontium emits red light. Which substance emits waves with a longer wavelength?
Calcium, because orange light have a longer wavelength than red light
Strontium, because red light have a longer wavelength than orange light
Neither, because orange light has the same wavelength as red light
9
Multiple Choice
Barium emits green light and Strontium emits red light. Which substance emits waves with a higher frequency?
Strontium, because red light have a higher frequency than green light
Barium, because green light have a higher frequency than red light
Neither, because green light has the same frequency as red light
