Purpose of Transportation

• Used to connect the states on the coast (i.e. New York, Rhode Island, Maine, Massachusetts) to states in the northwest (i.e. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, Illinois)

• roads, canals, railroads

• Early 1800's roads = terrible, expensive, long travel times

• 1800 Congress give $$$ for roads

• Towns built along roads

​Why would it be important to have these new ways (turnpikes, gov't money) to pay for roads?

Water Transportation

• Cheaper than land travel...but very slow at first

• Steamboats made water travel cheaper AND faster

• Canals allowed crops grown in northwest to be shipped to the coast cheaply and quickly

Trains in the Northern States

• Railroad allowed.......

  • travel during any season

• Pacific Railway Act....Congress said "OKAY" for a transcontinental railroad

• Transcontinental railroad gave....

  • jobs..new towns

  • linked both coasts..quicker travel
