EQ: How do you distribute a negative?

Distributing negative signs

A negative sign indicates what?
The opposite of the current number or term.
That means when distributing a negative sign, we are changing the current term.
We change it to the opposite.

Distributing A Negative

You are multiplying a negative sign with each term.
This results in finding the opposite of each term within the parenthesis ( ).
This is what you just practiced before this slide. Finding the opposite.
You must do the same when distributing the negative sign.

EX: - ( -3xy + 6x )

-1 * -3xy
= 3xy
-1 * 6x
= -6x
the simplified expression: 3xy - 6x

EX: -3 ( 2 + 4x )

-3 * 2
= -6
-3 * 4x
= -12x
the simplified expression: -6 - 12x
