Sentence Structure and connectors

simple sentences are made up of a subject and a verb

Examples:

1. The girls swim every day.

2. Joseph goes for karate lessons on Sundays.

compound sentences are made up of 2 or more simple sentences with the help of CONNECTORS

Examples:

1. They worked very hard.

2. They saved a lot of money.

3. So could afford to buy a flat.

a. They worked hard and saved a lot of money but they could not afford to buy a flat.

b. They worked hard and saved a lot of money and they finally afford to buy a flat.

compound sentences are made up of a simple sentences and a dependent or subordinate clause (a group of words that does not form a sentence but contains a verb and adds information to the main part of the sentence).

Examples:

1. This is the restaurant where I had my first taste of chicken chop.

2. She sent me an e-mail which showed a picture of a cat walking in front of a row of dogs.

Connectors are linking words. They are used to join 2 sentences together.

Example: and, but, if, because .......

1. and 和

2. as well as 和

3. not only ...... but also ..... (不只是....但也是....)

4. both ... and ... 和

1. but 但是

2. and yet 相反的

3. still 还

4. however 然而（但是）

5. although 虽然

6. despite 尽管如此

7. in spite of 尽管如此

Connector that showing choice:

1. or 2选1

2. or else 不然

3. either ... or ... （两者其一）

4. neither ... nor ... （两者都不是）
