Suffix Review

The suffix -y means “full of” and can be added to some nouns.  

chill (“cold”) → a chilly night (Ex: a cold night)

The suffix -ly means “in a certain way” and can be added to some adjectives.

happy → happily

The suffix -ive can be added to some verbs and nouns and means “inclined to” or “likely to.

defend (“to protect”) → defensive (“likely to to protect”)

The suffix -ment turns a verb into a noun

pay (“to give what is owed”) → payment (“the action of paying”) 

The suffix -ful can be added to some nouns and verbs and means “full of.”

sorrow (“sadness”) → sorrowful (“full of sadness”)

The suffix -less can be added to some nouns and means “without” or “lacking.”

worth → worthless

The suffix -able can be added to verbs or nouns and means “can be.”

avoid (“to stay away from”) → avoidable (“able to be avoided”)

The suffix -ity can be added to some adjectives and means “state of being.” 

absurd (“foolish”) → absurdity (“the state of being very foolish”)

The suffix -ness can be added to some adjectives and means “state of being.” 

dark (“having no light”) → darkness (“the state of having no light”)

The suffix -er can be added to some verbs and means “someone or something who” does something.

lead (“to guide”) → leader (“one who helps to guide other people”)
