From fossil clues, scientists know that the environments of a particular area have changed a lot over time.

The Mojave Desert
More than 250 million years ago was covered by a shallow sea. (organisms was different)
225 and 60 million years ago, the seas dried up, so the sea animals used to live there couldn't live any more.
Now it's a desert (cacti and yucca live there).
