Last lesson we learnt....
There are 5 main parts to a computer, the CPU, RAM, Power Supply Unit, Motherboard and the hard drive.
12
This lesson we are going to...
Look at how our information is stored inside a computer
How to convert a small binary number to our maths system.
13
Circuits
Circuits are usually found in light switches which are either on or off.
A computer also uses these circuits!
When you press a button on the keyboard such as the letter 'a' the computer knows that the letter has been typed.
Each of these letters and numbers on the keyboard have a unique code made up from this circuits.
14
Binary
Binary is the language computers understand.
Binary only has two possible digits 0 or 1.
These 0's and 1's come from the circuits inside the computer!
0 = OFF
1 = ON
15

18
Binary to Maths?
We can convert from binary to our maths system!
19
Maths!
In maths we have the placeholders 1's, 10's, 100's and 1000's.
The number 6203 is made up of 3 1s, 0 10s, 2 100s and 6 1000s.
20
Binary and Maths!
As binary only has two digits we use the placeholders 1, 2, 4 and 8 instead.
The binary number 0001 would be the number 1 in our maths system this is because the number 1 is in the placeholder that says 1.
21
Binary to Maths!
The binary number 0010 becomes the number 2 this is because the 1 is in the placeholder 2.
22
Binary to Maths!
The binary number 0011 becomes the number 3 this is because the placeholders 1 and 2 contain a 1, so I add these placeholders together to make 3. (1+2=3)
23

What about maths to binary?
If I know the maths number but want to work out the binary number all I need to do is work out which of the 4 numbers add together to make our number from 1, 2, 4 and 8.
32
Example
For example, I want the number 10, I know the numbers 8 and 2 make the number 10 so I need the placeholders 8 and 2, so I pop 1's in these place holders and 0's in the placeholders that aren't needed to make the binary number 1 0 1 0.
33
Completed Example
The number 10 in binary is 1 0 1 0 I know this is correct because 8 plus 2 equals 10 (remember we add the placeholders with a 1 in)
34
