• What jobs would these men do?

Irish Immigrants

• Left Ireland as a result of a famine

• Became farmers, wealthy businessmen, government jobs

• Looked for economic opportunity

• Why would they not just settle for labor jobs like most immigrants?

Chinese Immigrants

• Chinese government failing

• Looked for any kind of work

• Treated poorly...couldn't vote, paid poor, couldn't live next to Americans

• Why were the Chinese willing to settle for low paying jobs...as opposed to the Irish immigrants who weren't?

Japanese Immigrants

• Left Japan after a change in government style

• Took the place of Chinese immigrants

• worked mainly manual labor jobs

Scandinavian Immigrants

• Norwegians, Swedes, Finns, Danish

• 12% of our pop. was from here in 1910

• farming, railroad, lumber, shipbuilding, fishing

German Immigrants

• settled Palouse region

• developed E. Washington wheat industry

• German culture impacted American culture

• founded cities too

Italian Immigrants

• Almost last immigrant group to our state

• Did mainly urban jobs

• Construction.....buildings, water and sewer

• Became wealthy
