Effect of Exercise

We have now looked at two types of respiration - aerobic and anaerobic.

Exercise can effect both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. This is what we will look at briefly in today's lesson.

The remainder of the lesson, you will carry out your own investigation into how exercise effects the body.

During exercise, the human body reacts to the increased demand for energy. Cells need greater amounts of energy in order to move muscles at a faster capacity during exercise.

The heart rate, breathing rate and breath volume are all factors that increase during exercise in order to supply the muscles with oxygenated blood.

The arteries (large blood vessels which supply oxygenated blood) also dilate.

These changes all increase oxygenated blood flow to the muscles, which also increases the supply of glucose.

This also removes carbon dioxide more quickly.

For the remainder of the lesson, I would like you to carry out your own investigation into the effect of exercise on the body.

You need to complete the class notebook page - which involves a write-up of your investigation.

You need to measure your breathing rate and heart rate before and after exercise!

This exercise could be walking up/down the stairs for a minute, going for a run or simply walking around for a period of time - it is up to you!
