Recycling is more than placing newspapers, glass, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles into recycling bins. Much of the recycling process takes place after the bins are collected. This is where natural resources and energy are saved. It is more energy efficient to make a product from recycled material than it is to make a product from natural resources. For example, making a ton of paper from recycled paper saves 17 trees and uses 50 percent less water. Unfortunately, the United States currently recycles only 32.5 percent of its waste.
