2
Transport Processes
We have now looked at three ways in which 'stuff' can be transported in biology.
Diffusion
Osmosis
Active Transport
3
Diffusion
Substances move from a high to low concentration down a concentration gradient.
This is a passive process, which means that it does not need any energy.
4
Multiple Choice
TRUE OR FALSE? Diffusion acts against a concentration gradient.
True
False
5
Open Ended
Using the words diffusion, concentration gradient, oxygen and carbon dioxide, explain how the movement of gases occurs during photosynthesis in the leaf.
6
Osmosis
Water moves from a high to a low concentration across a partially permeable membrane and down a concentration gradient.
This is a passive process, which means that it does not need energy.
Osmosis is a type of diffusion.
7
Multiple Choice
What process do plants carry out to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose?
respiration
diffusion
photosynthesis
absorption
8
Osmosis
HYPERtonic - if the concentration of the solutes in the solution outside of the cell is higher than inside.
HYPOtonic - if the concentration of the solutes in the solution outside of the cell is lower than inside.
ISOtonic - the solution of the solutes in the solution outside of the cell is the same as inside.
9
Open Ended
What has happened to the plant cell in the middle picture?
10
Open Ended
The movement of oxygen from our alveoli (in our lungs) and into our blood occurs by diffusion. Why does it not occur by osmosis?
11
Active Transport
Substances move against a concentration gradient.
THIS IS NOT A PASSIVE PROCESS!
Energy is required for active transport to occur!
12
Multiple Choice
What process do mammals use to produce energy?
respiration
photosynthesis
breathing
sleeping
13
Multiple Choice
TRUE OR FALSE? Active transport acts along a concentration gradient.
TRUE
FALSE
14
Open Ended
