Eukaryotic Cells have Two Main Parts

• The Nucleus or Control Center

• The Organelles: Each has a specific job

The Nucleus

• The control center

• Contains the DNA or Chromosomes

• Is covered be a nuclear membrane

• Contains the nucleolus where ribosomes are made

The Endoplasmic Reticulum

• A series of channels or hallways; think of it as the assembly line!

• On the surface proteins, carbohydrates and lipids can be made

• RER has ribosomes

• SER does not have ribosomes

• Ribosomes make proteins

The Golgi Comples

• In charge of packaging and distribution

• Molecules made at the ER are "finished" at the Golgi Complex

• Vesicles move the molecules from place to place

The Mitochondria

• The powerhouse of the cell

• Provides the cell with energy

• Has its own DNA!

• Found in plant and animal cells

The Chloroplast

• Where plants perform photosynthesis

• Are bigger than mitochondria

• Animal cells don't have thm

• Have their own DNA

Centrioles

• Use by animal cells to help them divide and make new cells

• Occur in pairs

• Have their own DNA

• 
  

Lysosomes

• Vesicles or little sacs that contain enzymes

• The enzymes help digest food

• Considered the Janitors of the cell

Vacuoles

• Found in both plant and animal cells

• Bigger in plant cells

• Contain water and dissolved substances

Flagella

• Looks like a tail

• Helps the cell move

• Called cilia when they are short and numerous

Cell Membrane

• Surrounds ALL cells

• Controls what enters and leaves the cell

• 
  

Cell Wall

• Found in plant cells for extra support

• May be found in prokaryotic cells

• Not found in animals cells

• Protects and supports the cell
