Esp. 2 - los verbos con cambios de raíz

All verbs are conjugated by changing the ending (-ar, -er, -ir), but some verbs also require a small spelling change in the stem (main part) in certain conjugations. They still use the regular endings that we have used before.

o -- ue (dormir, morir, poder, volver)

e -- ie (querer, pensar, perder, empezar)

e -- i (pedir, servir, repetir, decir)

Stem-changing verbs are sometimes called "boot verbs" because the spelling changes only take place in 4 places - yo, tú, él/ella/Ud., and ellos/ellas/Uds..

Yo vuelvo a casa a las tres y media.

Ellos no pueden ir a la escuela.

Nosotros recomendamos el sándwich de pollo.

Ellos quieren empezar la película.

Mi amiga compite en muchos partidos de atletismo.

Jugar is the only verb that has a different stem-change; it changes from u -- ue.

Yo juego .................... nosotros jugamos

Tú juegas .................. vosotros jugáis

Él/Ella juega .............. ellos/Uds. juegan
