Comparatives

We use it to compare a quality between two people, animals, things, or actions.

We use an adjective for the comparative

noun + adjective + noun

(adjective) -er + than

Example: the mouse is smaller than the cat.

more + (adjective) + than

Example: This book is more expensive than the notebook.

We add "-er" for adjectives with 1 or 2 syllables.

Examples: tall, small, clever, old, young, short, fast, etc.

taller than, smaller than, cleverer than, older than, younger than, etc.

Example: happy, ugly, noisy, hungry, thirsty, heavy

the final -y changes into an -i

-i + -er = -ier

happy - happier than, noisy - noisier than, ugly - uglier than

good - better than

bad - worse than

far - further than

The rule of adding -er is not applied with these adjectives.

Adjectives with a Consonant + Vowel + Consonant structure

Examples: big, hot, thin, sad.

We need to double their final consonant:

bigger than, hotter than, thinner than, sadder than

more + (adjective) + than

The adjective doesn´t change.

ex: interesting, boring, intelligent, dangerous, colourful, beautiful, popular.

more interesting than, more boring than, more intelligent than, more dangerous than, more colourful than, more beutiful than, more popular than

Use to compare people, animals, places, actions, or things when they are equal, they have something in common (=)

the negative form is used when they aren´t equal (≠)

structure: noun + (not) as ............. as + noun.
