Before beginning here, you should have watched the EdPuzzle on reflexives which also compared them to DOPs and IOPs

Depending on when you took Spanish 2, you may have a special note sheet on these or you may just have written notes you made for yourself.

As you saw in the video, reflexive verbs (or reciprocal verbs) imply that the action comes back to the subject

That means you will MATCH the object pronoun with the subject

(which is what you could NOT do with DOPs and IOPs)

You will know when an infinitive verb is reflexive by the ending:

-arse, -erse, -irse

To conjugate, remove the -se from the end, bring it before the verb to match the subject, then conjugate the verb as needed

Here's the conjugation of the verb bañarse (to take a bath)

We'll review more specific reflexive verbs for routines later, but let's focus in on the ones in this chapter

1A Reflexives/Reciprocals

• hacerse miembro

• fijarse

• parecerse

• darse prisa

• and while this isn't on the list, llevarse bien/mal shows up in some practices, so we'll look at that one, too

Let's look at the conjugated forms of a few of these verbs

HACERSE miembro

• bring the -se out in front and conjugate hacer as usual

• Yo me hago miembro

• Tú te haces miembro

• Él/ella/Ud. se hace miembro

• Nosotros nos hacemos miembros

• Vosotros os hacéis miembros

• Ellos/Ellas/Uds. se hacen miembros

Darse prisa

• yo me doy prisa

• tú te das prisa

• él/ella/Ud. se da prisa

• nosotros nos damos prisa

• vosotros os dais prisa

• ellos/ellas/Uds. se dan prisa

Hey, what's the difference between darse prisa and tener prisa?

darse prisa is making the person hurry up

which is why you see the expression "Date prisa" a lot because it's telling you to hurry yourself up (give yourself "hurry")

tener prisa is saying you are in a hurry or a rush (you have "hurry")

llevarse bien/mal

to get along well/not with someone else

• this verb shows up a few times in some practices

• this action would considered reciprocal instead of reflexive, but don't stress about that difference - it's all the same in the end

• and notice it has nothing to do with the meaning of llevar - to wear that you've been practicing since Spanish 1

Examples:

• Yo me llevo bien con ella.

• Mis hermanos y yo nos llevamos mal.

• ¿Te llevas bien con tus padres?

• Los estudiantes siempre se llevan bien en mi clase.

And just like the other pronouns, reflexive pronouns can move to the end of infinitives or participles when those situations arise.

You need to focus on the work:

Tú te necesitas fijar en el trabajo.

Tú necesitas fijarte en el trabajo.

We are hurrying up right now:

Nosotros nos estamos dando prisa.

Nosotros estamos dándonos prisa.
