Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration
2
What is Photosynthesis?
The process by which a cell captures the energy in sunlight and uses it to make food
Photosynthesis takes place in two stages: capturing the sun's energy and producing sugars.
3
Capturing the Sun's Energy
This energy-capturing process occurs in the leaves and other green parts of the plant.
Chloroplasts are green organelles inside plant cells. In most plants, leaf cells contain more chloroplasts than other parts of the plant
Chloroplasts capture the light energy and use it to power the second stage of photosynthesis.
4
Using Energy to Make Food
The cell needs two raw ingredients for this stage: water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2)
Plant roots absorb water from the soil. The water then moves up through the plant’s stem to the leaves
Carbon dioxide is one of the gases in the air. Carbon dioxide enters the plant through small openings on the underside of the leaves
5
Multiple Select
What are the raw ingredients (reactants) needed for photosynthesis? (choose all that apply)
water
milk
carbon dioxide
oxygen
chocolate
6
7
Products of photosynthesis
Glucose (C6H12O6)
Oxygen (O2)
8
Multiple Select
What are the products that are produced during photosynthesis? (choose ALL correct answers)
carbon dioxide
glucose
m&ms
oxygen
sunlight
9
What happens to the GLUCOSE?
Plant cells use some of the sugar for food.
Other sugar molecules may be stored in the plant's cells for later use. When you eat food from plants, such as potatoes or carrots, You are eating the plant's stored food.
10
11
Multiple Choice
Plant cells use some of the glucose they make for food.
True
False
12
What happens to the OXYGEN?
The other product of photosynthesis is OXYGEN.
Most of the oxygen passes out of the plant and into the air.
13
PHOTOSYNTHESIS FORMULA
14
Cellular Respiration
Cells break down simple food molecules such as GLUCOSE and release the ENERGY they contain.
Cells of all living things carry out cellular respiration continuously.
15
Two Stages of Cellular Respiration- Stage 1
First stage happens in the cytoplasm where glucose molecules are broken down into smaller molecules.
Oxygen is NOT needed in this stage of respiration
Only a small amount of the energy is released during this stage.
16
Two Stages of Cellular Respiration- Stage 2
Second stage of respiration takes place in the mitochondria. There, the small molecules are broken down into even smaller molecules.
These chemical reactions DO require OXYGEN
LOTS of energy is released.
17
Multiple Select
What are the RAW MATERIALS (Reactants) needed for Cellular Respiration? (Choose ALL correct answers)
glucose
oxygen
carbon dioxide
energy
ice cream
18
Products of Respiration
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Water (H2O)
ENERGY
19
Multiple Select
What are ALL the products of Cellular Respiration?
Energy
Water
Glucose
Carbon dioxide
Pop Tarts

21
Opposite processes
During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water use light energy to produce glucose and oxygen.
During respiration, glucose and oxygen are used to produce carbon dioxide, water and ENERGY.
22
23
Fun Fact
Some cells are able to obtain energy from food without using oxygen.
Some single celled organisms live where there is no oxygen, such as deep in the ocean or in the mud of lakes and swamps
Fermentation is the process that provides energy for cells without using oxygen
