Nonverbal communication

• according to the book, it is all intentional and non intentional messages that are NOT written, spoken or sounded.

• must consider the sender's frame of reference, cultural background and specific situation.

At work, let's look at these 3 terms

• technical level- these are behaviors that are easily spoken of by most citizens of a particular culture. (greeting a customer)

• formal level- rules for behavior are clearly stated, but not the reason for this behavior (the typical office hours 9-5)

• Informal Level-these rules are unconsciously learned by imitaiton.

Haptics or touch

People from different cultures use touch differently. Studies show someone from Puerto Rico tends to use touch more that someone from England. A firm handshake makes a good impression. Look at page 140
