They are proprietary software, except that end user are not paying

How is the developer benefit from this?

Some freewares are providing limited functions or free for a certain amount of time (usually classify as shareware in this case)

Advertisement (very common in smartphone apps)

DLC (which is similar to point 1)

Malware (e.g. for DDoS), usually associated with pirate software but not limited to (e.g. some people claims that Facebook app is a spyware itself, collecting unnecessary data from user)
