When the Democratic-republicans gained control of Congress they reversed the Alien and Sedition Act

1803- Marbury V. Madison affirms the Supreme court's power of Judcial review

1804- Lewis and Clark explore the Louisiana Territory-- expands knowledge of the American West

1812- War of 1812 begins--strengthens American patriotism
