Growing Nationalism

• Nationalism is the feeling of pride and loyalty to your country

• Era of Good Feelings was when there was only one political party the National Republicans and there was less political fighting

• The U.S. is growing stronger and expanding west at a rapid pace.

• There were almost 10 million people in the U.S. at that time

• The world powers were taking the U.S. serious now

The Monroe Doctrine

• Central and South America were fighting their European rulers for their freedom and were inspired by the U.S.

• Great Britain, Spain, France, and Portugal were trying to take back their colonies and Monroe had a plan to stop them

• The Monroe Doctrine has four points

• 1st Point - The U.S. would stay out of European affairs

• 2nd Point - The U.S. would recognize European colonies already in the Americas

• 3d Point - Europe could not colonize more lands in North and South America

• 4th Point - Any attempt to colonize further would be an act of aggression and the U.S. would respond in kind
