the combination of two or more words can be known as compound words. Sometimes they'll keep their meaning and sometimes not.

Example: Police + man = policeman

Butter + fly = Butterfly

The definite article (the) is used before a noun to indicate that the identity of the noun is known to the reader. It is specific.

Example: Can you give me the black pen please?

The indefinite article (a, an) is used before a noun that is general or when its identity is not known or when you mention something for the first time.

Examples: There's an animal in the backyard

Can you give me a pen please?

There are certain situations in which you don't use articles. This is because you refer to a general idea.

Examples: -All trees are beautiful

-He was asking for advice

- I do not like coffee
