Percents are a type of Ratio

  • Any percent can be written as a ratio with a denominator of 100

     25% = 25100         4% = 410025\%\ =\ \frac{25}{100}\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 4\%\ =\ \frac{4}{100}

  • Since any percent can be written as a ratio, you can use equivalent ratios  and ratio tables to solve many percent problems.

7

Percent's as ratios

  • Any percent can be written as a ratio with a denominator of 100. To find what percent 3 is of 10, find a ratio that is equivalent to  310\frac{3}{10}  and has a denominator of 100.

  •  310=3101010=30100 or 30%\frac{3}{10}=\frac{3\cdot10}{10\cdot10}=\frac{30}{100}\ or\ 30\%

  •  310\frac{3}{10}  is an equivalent ratio to  30100\frac{30}{100}
