2.1 History of the US System of Government

The theory that a country should sell more goods to other countries than it buys.

The colonies were pretty much left alone to manage their own affairs. The British did not strictly enforce laws.

One of the acts that upset the colonies. You had to allow soldiers a place to stay and to feed them regardless if you knew them or agreed with the way the colonies were being ruled.

Served as the government of the 13 American colonies and later the United States.

First written constitution on the US. Weak and therefore failed.

The Enlightenment was a period of time when people developed new ideas about human existence, including basic rights and the level of control they should have over their government and their futures.

These natural rights included the right to life, liberty, property, and the freedom to find happiness. You're born with them and they need to be protected.

Citizens give up some freedom they would have in a state of nature (like the freedom to rob and kill people), and in exchange the government protects citizens’ right to life, liberty, and property.

If a government failed, then citizens would no longer agree to be governed and they would have the right to revolt.
