Open Ended

Do it now -

Know it -

1) Define a pure substance?

2) Define an impure substance?

3) Is Water a mixture or a compound?

4) Is air a mixture or compound?

5) Name this compound: CO2

Grasp it - In the following, which is the solvent, solute and solution?

a) hot water, coca powder and hot chocolate.

b) seawater, water and salt

Think it -

What does filtration mean?

3

Answers

Know it-

1) contains only 1 type of element or compound and they have the same properties.

2) contains more than one type of element or compound. They have different properties.

3) Water is a compound

4) Air is a mixture

5) Carbon dioxide

Grasp it-

a) solute = cocoa powder, solvent = hot milk, solution = hot chocolate

b) solute = salt, solvent = water, solution = sea water.

Think it - lets find out!

4

Filtration - learning objectives

  • Defining filtration

  • Identifying when to use filtration

  • Identifying types of mixtures that can be separated using filtration

5

Soluble and insoluble

If a substance can dissolve in a particular solvent, is it soluble.

Substances can be soluble in one solvent, but insoluble in another.

e.g. Nail varnish is soluble in nail varnish remover, but not in water.

6

Multiple Choice

Salt, sugar and hot chocolate powder can all be dissolved in water. What is the name for them?

1

solution

2

solvent

3

solute

4

insoluble

7

Filtration

What do we mean by filtration?

8

Filtration - keyword

It is the separation of an insoluble substance in a solid state from substance in a liquid state

(copy the word and definition in your books)

9

Open Ended

Can you think of any mixtures we have to filter before they are useful?

10

Filtration

When we filter, we use a porous surface that allows the smaller particles to pass through while the larger ones don't.

Porous - having holes (pores) that allow smaller particles to pass through.

How many examples of a filter can you give me (you may have more than one in your house!)

12

Filtration

When we are performing filtration in the lab, we have specific equipment we use.

14

write down the following steps

1) Pour the solution of liquid and insoluble solid into the funnel with the filter paper - slowly.

2) Allow the liquid to drip through the filter paper, leaving the insoluble solid (the residue) on the filter paper.

The liquid collected is called the filtrate

15

Filter paper

Filter paper comes in different grades, with smaller holes for trapping smaller particles.

We can also 'flute' it to increase surface area. Why would this be useful?

In your books, draw a particle diagram of a mixture of salt and water

You only need to draw what should be in the empty box

How can we remove the dissolved salt from the water?

19

Evaporation

If we evaporate the water from the solution, the salt will remain in the dish. We can do it slowly over time as evaporation will occur by itself, or we can use heat to speed it up.

20

Crystallisation

This is used to produce solid crystals from a solution.
