Theme: message an author is trying to teach you with a story; usually some sort of life lesson

Example themes:

- never give up

- work hard and practice

- try your best

- slow and steady wins the race

- be confident

- be honest

1. Read the story carefully.

2. As you read, look for clues the author may have left about their message.

3. Ask yourself: What is the author trying to teach or show me? Has the main character learned anything? What obstacles are they facing?

4. After you think you know the theme, look for evidence in the text to support it.
