Gravity in Our Solar System 3: Tide Data
Objectives:
I can identify patterns in tidal data.
- I can calculate tidal ranges.
- I can identify spring and neap tides.
2
Poll
What are tides?
Tides are changes in the way the Moon looks over a month.
Tides are daily changes in the elevation of the ocean surface.
Tides are huge waves caused by earthquakes.
Tides are water coming up the beach.
3
Describing Tides:
High vs. Low Tide
High tide is when the ocean level rises to its greatest elevation.
Low tide is when the ocean level drops to its lowest elevation.
Tidal range is the difference between these two elevations.

6
It is easier to see the high tides and low tides if we graph the data.
7
Multiple Choice
How many high tides does Lynn Harbor experience in one day?
1 high tide
2 high tides
4 high tides
8
Multiple Choice
How many low tides does Lynn Harbor experience in one day?
1 low tide
2 low tides
4 low tides
9
There are two high tides a day and two low tides a day.
10
Multiple Choice
About how much time goes by between a low tide and a high tide?
1 hour
2 hours
4 hours
6 hours
12 hours
11
Multiple Choice
What is the approximate interval between two high tides?
1 hour
2 hours
4 hours
6 hours
12 hours
12
It takes about 6 hours for the tide to change from low to high or from high to low. There are about 12 hours between high tides and 12 hours between low tides.
13
Comparing Tides:
It is helpful to calculate the tidal range if:
we want to compare tides at two different locations
we want to compare tides at the same location but at different times
14
How to Calculate
Tidal Range:
Find the highest tide of the day
Find the lowest tide of the day
Subtract the low tide from the high tide.
Range = High - Low
15
Multiple Choice
What was the tidal range at Lynn Harbor on Jan 9th?
Range = Highest - Lowest
9.9 feet
9.8 feet
9.4 feet
8.1 feet
16
17
Multiple Choice
What will the tidal range be at Lynn Harbor on Jan 26th?
9.1 feet
7.5 feet
8.6 feet
7.7 feet
18
19
Lets take a look at tide data for Lynn Harbor over a longer period of time.
20
This shows tidal data from Dec 3 to Jan 3. Each bottom point is a low tide. Each top point is a high tide.
21
Open Ended
The top peaks of the graph show all the high tides that occurred during this time period. Notice that the height of the high tides are NOT the same everyday.
Describe how the height of the high tides change from December 3rd to January 3rd.
22
There are two types of special tides we need to know about:
Spring tides
Neap tides
23
When the tidal range is very large, we call it a SPRING TIDE
24
When the tidal range is small, we call it a NEAP TIDE
25
Multiple Choice
Figure A and Figure B show high and low tides at two different times in Lynn Harbor.
Which figure shows the greatest tidal range?
Figure A
Figure B
26
Multiple Choice
Figure A and Figure B show high and low tides at two different times in Lynn Harbor.
Which figure shows a neap tide?
(neap = weak)
(spring = strong)
Figure A
Figure B
27
Multiple Choice
The data tables show tidal data for different days in Lynn Harbor. On one of the days a spring tide is occurring and on the other a neap tide is occurring.
Which day is a spring tide occurring?
(neap = weak)
(spring = strong)
