Describing Tides:

High vs. Low Tide

  • High tide is when the ocean level rises to its greatest elevation.

  • Low tide is when the ocean level drops to its lowest elevation.

  • Tidal range is the difference between these two elevations.

Comparing Tides:

It is helpful to calculate the tidal range if:

  • we want to compare tides at two different locations

  • we want to compare tides at the same location but at different times

How to Calculate

Tidal Range:

  • Find the highest tide of the day

  • Find the lowest tide of the day

  • Subtract the low tide from the high tide.

  • Range = High - Low
