Making Inferences!

An inference is a guess!

When you make an inference, you are making a guess about what you think will happen next!

To make an inference, you need to use what the author tells you, and what you already know!

"Sally sighed when she looked outside. She wanted to play, but it was going to be too wet. She grabbed her umbrella and went out anyway." Question: what is the weather like outside?

The author gave us many clues that we can use to find out what the weather was like! Take two minutes and think of three clues that you read! Write them down in your iwrite book!

The author said:

"it was going to be too wet."

"She grabbed her umbrella..."

What I know:

I know that rain is really wet

I know that you need an umbrella when it rains!

Based upon what the author said, and what I know, I know that it rained!

Elizabeth was jumping around all morning. She had waited for this day for a whole YEAR! This afternoon she would open presents, blow out candles and eat cake! What is Elizabeth celebrating?

Elizabeth is celebrating her birthday!

Mark was glad to be home. At school he fell down the stairs, dropped his lunch on the floor, knocked over his water onto his lap, and even failed his test! Do you think Mark is excited to go to school tomorrow?

Mark is NOT excited to go to school tomorrow!
