Now for the question word "why"
In French, they say "pourquoi" which comes from the French words "pour" and "quoi" ("for and "what")
Pourquoi=why
12
There are two ways to answer the question "pourquoi" in French!
1. you can use "because" which is "parce que"
2. you can use "to + verb" which in French uses the structure "pour + [infinitive verb]"
13
Examples
Pourquoi est-ce que Bob va au restaurant?
1. Bob va au restaurant parce que Bob a faim. (Bob goes to the restaurant because Bob is hungry.)
In this example we see we have our subject verb (Bob va), the rest of the question (au restaurant) BECAUSE (parce que) and then a reason (il a faim).
Why does Bob go to the restaurant?
because he's hungry (parce que...)
14
Examples
Pourquoi est-ce que Bob va au restaurant?
2. Bob va au restaurant pour manger. (Bob goes to the restaurant to eat.)
In this example, we still have our subject, verb, rest of the question (Bob va au restaurant) but now instead of using "because" we give pour + the infinitive verb manger (infinitive verbs in French end in either ER, RE, or IR--it's the basic form of the verb)
Why does Bob go to the restaurant?
To eat (pour manger)
