The preterite tense is used for completed actions in the past

e.g. el primer día, llegué temprano - on the first day, I arrived early

It is also often used for giving opinions in the past

Me gustó trabajar allí - I liked working there

-ar verbs : é, aste, ó, amos, astéis, aron

-er verbs: í, iste, ió, imos, istéis, ieron

- ir verbs: í, iste, ió, imos, istéis, ieron

ir - fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron

ser - fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron

hacer - hice, hiciste, hizo, hicimos, hicisteis, hicieron

tener - tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvisteis, tuvieron

The imperfect tense is used for repeated actions in the past

e.g. cada mañana, cogía el autobús - every day I caught the bus

It is also used for descriptions in the past

e.g. mis colegas eran muy agradables - my colleagues were very pleasant
