So far we have been partitioning (dividing) 2 dimensional shapes into equal parts.

By the way, 2 dimensional shapes are shapes that have a length and a width.

Now we will partition (divide) lines into equal parts.

A line can be defined as a straight one- dimensional figure that has no thickness and continues endlessly in both directions.

Since a line goes on forever on both ends, in order to partition (divide) it, we have to identify its endpoints; a beginning and an end, a "0" and a "1."

Now that the line segment is partitioned into halves, 2 equal parts, we can label each tick mark with the fraction it represents.

Now lets focus on each fractions' numerator (the number above). Recall that the numerator identifies a specific equal part or parts of the whole.

Pretend to be Mario at the start of this course, each numerator represents the number of jumps (equal parts) towards the goal.

Since zero 0 jumps have been made towards the goal, the numerator, the number above, is "0."

Since Mario has taken one jump (equal part) towards the goal (1 whole), the second fraction is 1/2.

The last fraction is 2 halves (2/2). Notice when the numerator and denominator are the same, that fraction represents 1 whole as well.

The concept development level has been completed, now it's time to take on the problem set.
