The period after the Civil War is referred to as the Reconstruction Period. It was a time to repair the social, political, economic, and physical effects of the war on the Southern states. It was meant to help the Southern states become part of the Union once more. 

Federal troops occupied these states to make sure they were following the law. 

They also wanted to prevent another uprising.

During the war, Lincoln had presented a plan called the Amnesty and Reconstruction Plan, or Ten Percent Plan. Its goal was to help the states that had seceded rejoin the Union. It explained how the new state governments were to be established.

The Reconstruction period started at the end of the war. It lasted twelve years, from 1865 to 1877. 

Let’s look at what Reconstruction meant to the country.

The South’s economy changed. It now included both agriculture and manufacturing. 

Congress passed Amendments to help protect the rights of all people. Slaves were free, but they had difficulty finding paying jobs. The South offered state-funded public schools for the first time. African Americans established their own religious institutions which became an important part of community life.

The country was reunited. The Southern states had to take oaths and apply to be readmitted to the Union. Some African Americans were elected or appointed to public office. 

Each state experienced its own unique challenges during Reconstruction. Some did not have much physical damage. However, others were devastated. The people in many of the Southern states had to work to rebuild their lives and communities while facing other challenges.

There were many effects of the American Civil War on the country. An important one is that slavery ended. This image shows the first African American Senators and Representatives elected to Congress. The Reconstruction period lasted from 1865 to 1877. It focused on reconstructing the South and helping the Southern states rejoin the country. Southern states faced a number of challenges during Reconstruction, including the unfair treatment of African Americans because of laws called “Black Codes.”
