The Development

Lets listen to just the development and follow the score

Main features of the development

• Begins with the first two bars of S1 heard in imitation

• At bar 129, the quavers from the counter-theme (figure ‘y’ from bar 13) are heard using diminished harmony

• Bar 139 – 155: Continuous quavers in violins

• At 155, there is development and use of figure ‘x’, and figure ‘z’

• A one-bar rest for all instruments in bar 166

• Bar 167 – 194 development of S2b.

Where does the development start?

You will have noticed that eduqas states that the development starts at bar 118 and that the annotated score has bar 123, and ZigZag says bar 118.4. This is simply to do with who includes the repeat in their analysis.

The main development material starts at bar 123 and this is what is important. Any questions on the development will only be about material from this section.

Diminished harmony

Haydn uses diminished chords throughout the development to add some tension and interest.

The end of the development

In 185, the bass arrives on a C#, which then remains as a pedal note for the next 8 bars. The music moves through the key of F# minor – and the pp chord of C# major in this key (i.e. the dominant chord) moves via an interrupted cadence to the root note of the submediant chord of D and a return to the sustained notes of D again in the horns signals a return to the first subject material, and the arrival of the Recapitulation section.

Bar 2 has the V of Eb which is Bb going to the vi submedient chord of Eb which is C minor

The different bar numbers in the annotated score

Just to go back to the differences between the annotated score and the yellow score you have. The discrepancy comes with the repeat where the bars are included in the annotated score and left out (not numbered) in the yellow score. This means that from the development in the annotated score, the bar numbers will always be 5 bars out with the annotated score.
