How did we get nine?

  • Pick two sets of points. For example (1,13) and (2, 22)

  • Label them y1 , y2 and x1, x2

  • Subtract the y's in the numerator and the x's in the denominator.

  • Slope Equation: m = y2 - y1 = x2 - x1

  • m = 22 - 13 / 2 - 1

  • Slope = 9/1 or 9

EXAMPLE 1 - Given the point and slope below find the equation of the line in point slope form.

(3,5) m = 7

  • Write Equation: y - y1 = m(x - x1)

  • Substitute point and slope into equation.: y - 5 = 7(x - 3)

  • DONE!

EXAMPLE 2 - Given the point and slope below find the equation of the line in slope intercept form. (y = mx + b)

(3,5) m = 7

  • Write Equation: y - y1 = m(x - x1)

  • Substitute point and slope into equation.: y - 5 = 7(x - 3)

  • Distribute 7 : y - 5 = 7x - 21

  • Add 5 to both sides : y = 7x - 16

  • DONE!
