WEEK 1

Types of Variation

DIRECT VARIATION

• is a relationship between two variables such that one variable changes in the same manner as the first variable

• For two quantities, x and y, an increase in x causes an increase in y as well. Similarly, a decrease in x causes a decrease in y.

Direct Variation Examples:

• The time a teacher spends in checking test papers to the number of students.

•  The distance an airplane flies to the time travelling.

• The area of the wall is related to the amount of paint used to cover it.

• An employee’s salary to the number of days he has worked.

• The cost of fish to its weight in kilograms.

INVERSE VARIATION

• is a relationship between two quantities such that their product is constant.

• For two quantities x and y, an increase in x causes a decrease in y or vice versa.

Inverse Variation Examples:

• The number of hours to finish a job to the number of persons working.

• The number of people sharing a pizza is related to the size of the slices of the pizza.

JOINT VARIATION

• a combination of atleast two direct variation. (meaning relationship of more than two variables.

• For three quantities, x and y and z, an increase in x causes an increase in y and z . Similarly, a decrease in x causes a decrease in y and z.

Joint Variation Examples

• The area of a rectangle to the length and the width.

• The pressure P of gas to its density D, and its absolute temperature T.

COMBINED VARIATION

• a combination of direct and inverse variation.

• For three quantities, x and y and z, an increase in x causes an increase in y and decrease in z . Similarly, a decrease in x causes a decrease in y and an increase to z.

• example: The pressure P of a gas varies directly as its temperature t and inversely as its volume V.

Tell which type of variation is involved in the following situations.

Explanation:

An increase in distance means an increase of fare as well as a decrease in distance means a decrease in fare.

(Mas malayo pupuntahan mo mas mataas ang pamasahe. Mas malapit, mas mababa pamasahe)

Explanation

The more persons that will share to a pizza the smaller the size of pizza that you will eat.

( Mas madami kayong taong kakain mas maliit ang hiwa ng pizza na makakain ng bawat isa, kapag naman Mas kaunti ang bilang ng kakain mas malaki o madami kayong makakain na pizza.)

Joint because we are now talking about more than two quantities.

and also their relationship to each other is direct.

(Joint na siya kasi mas madami na sa 2 relasyon at lahat ang epekto sa isat isa na kapag tumaas ang height tatas din ang radius at volume etc. )

Explanation

It is combined variation because we there were more than two variables but their relationship is a combination of direct variation and inverse variation.

(Combined sapagkat higit nga sa 2 ang relasyon pero may isang tumataas at may isang bumababa . Pinagsama ang direct at inverse )
