DU is used for masculine foods we eat some of, like "du gâteau (some cake)", "du pain (some bread)", or "du fromage (some cheese)"
DE LA is used for feminine foods we eat some of, like "de la glace (some ice cream)", "de la dinde (some turkey)"
Ex: Je mange des cerises - i am eating some cherries
Je mange du pain = I am eating some bread
Tu manges de la glace = you are eating some ice cream
