1st conditional (real present or future)

if + present simple, will/can/may do

2nd conditional (unreal present or future)

if + past simple, would/could/might do

3rd conditional (unreal past)

if + past perfect (had done), would/could/might have done

You can begin your sentence with were in the second conditional or had in the third conditional and change the word order as follows:

If he learnt to drive, it would open up new job opportunities. = Were he to learn to drive, it would open up new job opportunities.

If I had spent less time studying, I would have been less tired before the exam. = Had I spent less studying, I would have been less tired before the exam.
