The Biography of Dawn Fraser

Dawn Fraser was a famous swimmer. In three Olympics, Dawn Fraser won four gold and four silver medals. This is her story.

Dawn was the youngest child in her family. She had eight brothers and sisters. She was born in Sydney, in Australia.

Dawn wanted to learn to swim. When she was a child, Dawn often had Asthma and could not breathe very wellbut this did not stop her.

She went to the swimming pool every day and learnt to swim. She practiced and practiced.

Dawn moved to Adelaide when she was fifteen. It was a long way from home. She went to a special swimming school. She worked in a shop for some money and swam as much as possible.

She won a lot of competitions. In 1956, she swan for Australia in the Melbourne Olympic Games---and won two gold medals!

She won a gold medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics, too.

When Dawn was thirteen her brother, Don, died. Before he died , he told Dawn, "Keep on swimming. One day, you will be a champion." Dawn always remembered his words.

One night, in 1964, Dawn was driving her mother and sister home. She drove round a corner and hit a lorry. Her mother died in the crash and Dawn injured her back.

Dawn was in hospital for nine weeks and was very sad. She thought she could not swim again. But nothing stopped Dawn. Soon she started swimming again.

She swam for Australia in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and won another gold medal! She said that this medal was for her mother and father.

In 1961, Dawn's father died, but Dawn continued to work hard to improve her swimming.
