L'imparfait

L’imparfait is used in French to express actions which took place in the past and are still continuing or if they have stopped, the ending is unclear

To form l’imparfait, begin with the “nous” form of the verb, drop the ons and add the following endings:

je ...................... ais

tu ...................... ais

il/elle ...................... ait

nous ...................... ions

vous ...................... iez

ils/elles...................... aient

Eg. Parler

• Begin with "nous" form

• nous parlons

• drop the "ons"

• you are left with the stem parl

add the imparfait endings to the stem

(parl + ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient)

• je parlais

• tu parlais

• il/elle parlait

• nous parlions

• vous parliez

• ils/elles parlaient

L'imparfait has 3 meanings in French:

eg. Je parlais – I used to talk, I was talking, I talked

Eg. Finir

• Begin with "nous" form

• nous finissons

• drop the "ons"

• you are left with the stem finiss

add the imparfait endings to the stem

(finiss + ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient)

• je finissais

• tu finissais

• il/elle finissait

• nous finissions

• vous finissiez

• ils/elles finissaient

  *** Être is the only verb which is "irregular" in l’imparfait

• we cannot use the nous form because nous sommes has no "ons" to drop

• instead use ét + endings

L'imparfait of the verb Être

• j'étais

• tu étais

• il/elle était

• nous étions

• vous étiez

• ils/elles étaient

For irregular verbs use the irregular "nous" form

Eg. Faire

• Begin with "nous" form

• nous faisons

• drop the "ons"

• you are left with the stem fais

add the imparfait endings to the stem

(fais + ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient)

• je faisais

• tu faisais

• il/elle faisait

• nous faisions

• vous faisiez

• ils/elles faisaient
