3

Surah At Takaathur

  • A Makki Surah

  • Revealed after Surah Al Kawthar

  • 1 Ruku

  • 8 Ayats

  • 28 Words

  • 120 Letters (Huruf)

4

In this surah, we learn about the race that people are busy in, the race to gain more in the duniya. (this world)

The competition between people, chasing the duniya and forgetting about what is more important. Allah SWT is teaching us what happens when we chase duniya.

6

أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ

The competition in wordly increase, diverts you

7

الهَاكُم - Root word = ل ه و

ل ه و = Entertainment/Amusement - The type of amusement that distracts a person from what is more important,

e.g. A person is watching a movie on the television, but its time for Salah, what is more important at that time is the salah. However, that entertainment distracts a person and keeps him/her occupied, which cause a person to neglect what is more important.

8

What Has diverted people from what is more important ? التكاثر

  • The competition for increase

  • The desire for more

Slide image

9

التكاثر - Root word

= ك ث ر

Abundance

A person is constantly competing against other people, comparing himself to them, wanting to have more and more.

(not just money, it can be ANYTHING, children, houses, cars, status etc)

The only takaathur that is good is that which benefits a person in the hereafter.

11

You will find very few people who will compete with each other for the Akhirah

  • no one wil say " oh that person has performed umrah, so I should perform umrah" or...

  • "This person is praying, I should also go and pray " or..

  • "This person has memorized this much of the Qur'an, I should also do it. And if people do have the desire to memorize it would usually be for the purpose of showing off or just to say, yes I'm also good and have memorized that."

  • But the Takaathur mentioned in this surah is the one for the duniya.

12

حَتَّى زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ

“Until you visit the graves.”

meaning : You are running around in the duniya , in this competition until death approaches you, everything that you have collected or saved, you will leave behind. Its not going to come with you!!

13

كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ - “Nay! You shall soon know,"

Meaning : STOP! all of this takaathur, do not run after this duniya, if you dont stop then soon you will know the consequenses of what your chasing.

This ayat is repeated twice in this surah as a WARNING because people dont listen when they are told the first time.

14

لَتَرَوُنَّ الْجَحِيمَ - “You shall certainly see the blazing fire,"

Meaning : On the day of judgement, you will definitely see the hellfire

Slide image

15

ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ الْيَقِينِ - “Again, you will surely see it with the eye of certainty !"

Meaning : Right now, you have been informed about the hellfire. On that day you will see the hellfire and you wont doubt it.

EVERYONE will be made to see it - Those who will enter it and those who will go to Jannah.

Slide image

16

ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ

“Then, on that Day you will surely be questioned about the joy (you indulged in).”

Meaning : On that day we will be questioned about all the blessings we had and all the pleasures we have enjoyed in this world . How we used it, did we waste it, did we benefit from it, were we greatful for it.

17

what lessons do we learn from this surah?

Don't be distracted by chasing after worldly things. Stay focused on what is more important (the hereafter) Don't compare yourself to others. Be grateful for what you have, don't think about what you don't have. Remember that we will be questioned about all the blessings Allah gave us.
