Pronouns and references
Week 4- Travel & Culture
2
To be an excellent reader....
you need to be able to detect references.
3
References are used widely in reading texts.
It is used to avoid repetition- instead of "As Ali walked along the darkened alley, Ali cannot help but to look at Ali's behind to make sure that Ali wasn't followed.
You can write "As Ali walked along the darkened alley, he cannot help but to look at his behind to make sure that he wasn't followed".
4
As such, it is VITAL for you to be able to detect and understand references.
Generally, it comes in two forms: pronouns & others
5
PREPOSITIONS
The groups of prepositions
6
PERSONAL PRONOUNS
Easy peasy- we use them to replace proper name of a person
e.g.: I, You, We, They, He, She, It.
7
REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS
We use this when the subject and the object are the same.
e.g. I (subject) cut (verb) myself (object).
e.g.: myself, yourself/yourselves, ourselves, themselves, himself, herself, itself.
8
RELATIVE PRONOUN
We use them to give further information on the nouns.
e.g.:This is the house (noun) that (relative pronoun) Jack built (the further information)
e.g.: who, whom, whose, which, that
9
DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS
We use this to point at things
e.g.: This, that, those, these, none, neither (and many more!)
10
OTHERS
These words can be an adverb, an adjective, or even a noun. It depends on the context.
