The sun, moon and stars

2

The Sun

The sun has been shining for 4.6 billion years and has remained relatively unchanged over time. The core temperature of the sun is 27 million degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than anything found on earth, even the earth’s fiery core.

3

Multiple Choice

How long has the sun been shining?

1

4.6 billion years

2

12 billion years

4

Multiple Choice

How hot is it on the sun?

1

1000 degrees

2

27 million degrees

3

1 million degrees

5

Multiple Choice

What on earth is hotter than the sun?

1

soup heated in a microwave

2

a fever

3

nothing

6

Using the sun's heat

Electricity can be generated from the sun's heat. Referred to as solar energy, it can be captured using solar reflective panels and stored in batteries or transferred directly into the electrical grid.

7

Multiple Choice

What do we call the energy we get from the sun?

1

Microwave radiation

2

Solar energy

3

Kinetic energy

8

The moon

The moon’s surface is covered with craters from meteorites crashing into the surface from space. Because the moon is so small -- one-sixth the size of the earth -- it is unable to hold an atmosphere to protect it from the onslaught of passing meteors.

9

Multiple Choice

What covers the moon's surface?

1

craters

2

dimples

3

volcanos

4

rivers

10

Multiple Choice

How big is the moon compared to the size of the earth?

1

1/2

2

1/6

3

1/3

11

The moon is only one sixth as big as the earth!

12

Gravity

Gravity is an invisible force that pulls objects towards each other. Earth's gravity keeps us on the ground and makes things fall.

13

The moon's gravity

The moon also has very little gravitational pull, and walking on the moon is much harder than here on earth. The moon is the only celestial body other than earth that man has landed and walked on.

14

Multiple Choice

Why is it harder to walk on the moon?

1

There is too much gravity.

2

The space suit is heavy.

3

There is less gravity holding us down.

15

Multiple Choice

How many planets, besides Earth, have people walked on?

1

One (the moon)

2

Two (the moon and Mars)

16

The Stars

There are so many stars in the universe that it is impossible to count them all. About 7,000 stars can be seen with the naked eye from earth. Many stars and constellations were named in ancients times for gods and animals that they resembled.

17

Multiple Choice

How many stars can be seen with the naked eye?

1

5,000

2

7,000

3

1 million

4

1.5 million

18

Multiple Choice

What does the following phrase mean? "With the naked eye"

1

Not wearing sun glasses

2

Not wearing makeup

3

Without use of a telescope

19

How stars appear

Many stars that are visible no longer exist, but because their light takes so long to reach the earth, they are still visible long after they have expired. The turbulence in earth's atmosphere is the reason why the stars appear to twinkle when we look at them.

20

Multiple Choice

Are all the stars we see still in existence?

1

No

2

Yes

21

Multiple Choice

What causes stars to appear to twinkle?

1

The fact that they are so small.

2

They twinkle when we are wearing sunglasses.

3

Turbulence in the Earth's atmosphere.

22

More about the sun

When we look at the stars in the night sky, it is difficult to imagine that our blazing sun is also a star. It is the star nearest to the Earth. Although the sun is close to the Earth in cosmic terms, it is still 93 million miles away.

23

Multiple Choice

The sun is actually....

1

the closest star to earth.

2

a giant alien space ship

3

a planet

24

Multiple Choice

How far away is the sun?

1

10 miles

2

93 million miles

3

too many miles to count

25

Size and age of the sun

The sun is 109 times wider than the Earth and 330,000 times heavier. The sun formed approximately 4.5 billion years ago and will burn for an estimated 5 billion years more, so the sun is at the mid-point of its lifespan.

26

Multiple Choice

How much longer is the sun likely to last?

1

5 billion years

2

3 billion years

3

until Christmas vacation

27

Multiple Choice

Last question: what do the sun and stars have in common?

1

They are both wicked big.

2

They both twinkle.

3

The sun is a star.

4

You can see them at the same time.

28

Slide image

Sure looks like a million stars to me!

29

Multiple Choice

How much heavier is the Sun compared to the Earth?

1

300,000 pounds more

2

one million pounds more

3

300 pounds more

30

Comparing sizes

Just to make it clearer, 300,000 times heavier is the difference between a can of soup and 100,000 gorillas!
