Taking the Square Roots

(ax+c)²=0

ax²+c =0

Missing "b" or "x" term
Doesn't have to =0
Get x² or the binomial squares by itself before taking the square root.
Don't forget the +/-

Multiple Choice

Solve the equation using the square root method. Simplify!

$\frac{7}{8}$

$\pm\frac{7}{8}$

$\pm\sqrt{\frac{49}{64}}$

$\frac{49}{64}$

Completing the Square

ax²+bx+c=0

The "b" or "x" term is even
Starts with x² or has a GCF
Doesn't need to =0
After factoring, Set both factors =0 and SOLVE for x.

Multiple Choice

Solve by completing the square:

x^2+10x=-9

x = 1 and -12

x = 1 and -9

x = -1 and -9

x = 1 and -1

Factoring

Must be in standard form and =0
If missing "c" term the use GCF Factor (Pull out the biggest number the terms share)
After factoring, Set both factors =0 and Solve for x.

Use when equation is not factorable
ALL QUADRATICS CAN BE SOLVED WITH THE QUADRATIC FORMULA!

Solve the equation using the quadratic formula.

-10k^2-6k+6=0

$x=\frac{-3\pm\sqrt{69}}{10}$

$x=\frac{6\pm2\sqrt{69}}{-20}$

$x=\frac{-3\pm\sqrt{51}}{10}$

$x=\frac{6\pm2\sqrt{51}}{-20}$
